Quick answer

Savings equal original price × discount percentage / 100. Subtract savings from the original price to get the sale price: 20% off 100 saves 20 and leaves 80.

03

Example

20% off $100 saves $20 and gives a sale price of $80.

Units, assumptions, and limitations

  • Original price is non-negative and the discount is between 0% and 100%.
  • The tool applies one discount and excludes sales tax, shipping, and other charges.

Common mistake to avoid

Adding successive discounts. Two 20% discounts leave 64% of the original price, rather than 60%.

One sale discount

Original price
120 $
Discount
25 %

Result: 90

  1. 120 × 25 ÷ 100 = 30 saved
  2. 120 − 30 = 90

A 25% reduction on a 120 item gives a 90 sale price and 30 savings. Add shipping and tax separately if you are comparing the final checkout total.

Second discount on a reduced price

Original price
80 $
Discount
20 %

Result: 64

  1. 80 × 20 ÷ 100 = 16 saved
  2. 80 − 16 = 64

After an initial 20% discount on 100, enter the remaining 80 as the new original price. A second 20% discount leaves 64, so two reductions are not a single 40% discount.
